The Department of English was established in 1954 by Prof. M.V. Rama Sarma as the Head, with Under-Graduate Course. Later it was opened for Post-Graduate courses in 1959 with core emphasis on English Literature. The same year saw the bifurcation of the department retaining PG course. The Department began with 10 students and gradually the intake has increased to 60. The thrust areas of the Department are British Literature, Indian Literatures in English, American and New Literatures besides Comparative Literature, Translation Studies and English Language Teaching giving importance to all the genres of English Literature. The Department has the unique distinction of having had an exclusive paper on Miltonic studies. Presently, the Department has the honor of introducing exclusive elective on the genre, short story. Along with the teaching of literatures, research and training programmes, production of teaching materials, and extension services are in progress to help improve language teaching standards in the University region. EXTENSION ACTIVITES:
The Department extends services to B.Tech., Law, Pharmacy courses on the Campus.
Honorary Language editing consultancy for all the departments and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, Sri Venkateswa Institute of Medical Sciences, Sri Padmavathi College of Nursing.

The department Library was established in 1985 with a few books donated by philanthropists. Later many donors came forward by donating books related to English Literature & Language.
INNOVATIONS:
Introduction of Short Story as an Elective Course.
The Department has produced research work on Classical Masters, Female Slave narratives, Comparative & Tribal Literature, Indian Feminist Hermeneutics, and English Language Teaching.
All India English Teachers’ Association Annual Conference was held in 2019.
A National Conference on Historiography of Indian Literatures.
Conduct of the Soft skills & Communicative English courses to the students of all branches of the University as an Open Elective Course.
Conduct of the Writer’s Meet and Meet the Writer with writers of all Indian Languages.
