Library & Information Science

The Department of Library and Information Science was established in the year 1974 with one year B.L.I.Sc., programme. Subsequently one year M.L.I.Sc., programme was started in 1985 and two year integrated M.L.I.Sc., programme was started in 1996. The founders of the department who got superannuated were Sri.N.Sripathi naidu garu, Prof. N.Guruswarmy Naidu garu and Prof.T.Rajagopal garu. Other three eminent professors Prof.V.Pulla Reddy garu, Prof.D.Chandran garu Prof.I.Chandraiah garu and Prof.K.Padmini garu also superannuated from the department in 2012, 2013, 2018 and 2020 respectively.
At present One regular Faculty Member and Five Academic Consultants are working in the department. Regarding research 89 Ph.D, s and 32 M.Phils were awarded in the department. Faculty members actively participated in national and international conferences published papers in National and International journals and did UGC Projects on Reading Habits among Children and Creation of Online Bibliographic Database of Management Studies. Two Faculty members were honored with Keerthi Purasakars by Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University.
The main focus of the department laid on to produce very good professionals in management of information systems and services along with quality research to contribute mighty to the profession and the subject. A special emphasis has been laid on teaching to develop the students with communication skills by organizing Seminars and Webinars in regular intervals. Another focus is on raising the confidence of the students by involving them in hands on training in the information technology and other technical devices in the area of information dissemination. The department is assisting other department libraries through installing library automation softwares and creating library databases for easy retrieval of books and other reading materials.
To provide practical knowledge on library housekeeping activities among the students the department is conducting extension activities for students. Under this program the students visited SHAR, central library, Sriharikota, Oriental Research Institute, SVU, SVETA Library,
Tirupati, Sanskrit Vidyapeetam Library and also attended the workshop on Koha software conducted by IIT, Mumbai.
The department is also providing guidance to the students of the department who are appearing for UGC NET and SET examinations. 55 students are qualified in the UGC-NET SLET and SET exam. The department is providing Psychological, Academic and Career counseling to the students.
Sri Venkateswara University Library has been providing Orientation programme and Internship / Apprenticeship programme to our students. In this regard we thank Dr.k.Surendrababu for giving the opportunity to our students. The department also thank Dr.Giri Naidu and Dr.Usha Rani for providing Internship to our students. A good number of students participated in Internship and Apprenticeship programmes in libraries like IIT, NIFT and SHAR etc.
OPPORTUNITIES
Many of the alumni are serving in the departments of Library and Information Science of various Universities as Teachers, Librarians, Information Officers/Documentation Officers/ Scientists in various educational, scientific and research institutions in the State and Central Government Organisations in public academic and special libraries, institutions and organizations. The department informs the students about the job opportunities and extends assistance in getting placements in libraries. The department is actively conducting the programmes like Librarian’s Day on the eve of Dr.S.R.Ranganathan garu, National Library Week, Gadicherla Harisarvothamma Rao garu and Paturi Nagabhushnam’s birth aniiversary celebrarions and Teacher’s Day
LIBRARY
The department has a library with 148 books, besides 32 M.Phil., 75 Ph.D and 143 Dissertations. The library has also few reference sources and schedules like DDC 22nd Edition (7Sets), CC, UDC and Sear’s List of Subject Headings. One set of LCSH and general as well as competitive books were donated by the Alumni.
