About Anthropology Department

The Department of Anthropology was started in the year 1971 by then Ex Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. D. Jagannadha Reddy. A medical doctor JIPMER, Pondicherry with a view to study Human Population and Human Society an inspiring thrust areas in and around the globe. He invited a famous dynamic sociologist cum anthropologist Prof . D.P. Mukherjee from Kolkatta university who laid strong foundation and strengthened department. There after the department has grownup in various specializations in Anthropology Vis-a-Vis gained recognition across the globe as a premier department for training and research that deals and address human problems.

The department has handled 72 research projects with an outlay of Rs. 2.5 cores funded by various organizations. Currently Two ongoing projects funded by ICMR are in Progress. 85 Ph.Ds and 42 M.Phil degrees were awarded. The department has produced 30 books and more than 400 research publications. The faculty members are effectively involved in consultancy with various agencies.

The Special Assistance Programme funded by UGC during the year 1992 to 2012 was successfully operated and also successfully completed UGC Centre of Advanced studies during 2013-2018.
