Prof. M. Hema did her M. Sc. and Ph.D in Virology from the Dept. of Virology at SV University, Tirupati. Currently she is acting as Head and Chairperson, BOS, Department of Virology, SV University. She worked as group leader in Indian Immunological Ltd, Gachibowli, Hyderabad for two years and She has 15 years of teaching and 28 years of research experience. She is a recipient of Fellow of APAS (2018), Erasmus Mundus Brave European Staff visiting fellowship (2018), Amaravati and United States India Education Foundation (USIEF) Fulbright Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship (FBN-APE) (2016-2017) and DBT Long term Overseas Associateship (2009-2010). Her specialization in molecular characterization of plant, animal and human viruses, elucidation of the requirements for plant viral RNA replication including RNA structures/functions guiding recombination, repair and interaction with cellular environment, development of novel strategies for virus vaccines and diagnostics and virus based nanotechnology made her to publish 60 research publications in reputed national and international journals. She presented papers in 6 international and 20 national conferences. She completed 5 major research projects and has one major project on-going. Currently she is working on using plant virus nanoparticles for biotechnological applications. She visited countries like USA, Canada and Nigeria as a post-doctoral fellow and visiting scientist.

Ø Prepared a brochure for the Virology Department as part of subject related events to promote the course and given a common lecture in the form of power point presentation titled :Viruses are small but can do big things” in degree colleges of Tirupati and around Tirupati to attract more talented and interested students towards Virology. Ø Conducted Open House Exhibition-2015 in the Department as part of NAAC accreditation programme and motivated research and M. Sc students to make novel exhibits/projects, got applauds from the public and got selected for first prize as a token of appreciation from the SV University. Ø PRAJNA, an innovative programme, was conceived by the University to develop and promote scientific temper among the school children to enable them to acquire hands on experience in the science laboratories and to groom them as future scientists. As part of this programme, Achanti Archisha, Student of 9th grade from Mendon High School, Rochester, NY, USA did summer internship programme on viral diagnostics during 30th June to 7th August, 2014 in Dr. M. Hema laboratory, Virology, SV University, Tirupati. Ø Acted as jury member in the INSPIRE district level science exhibition-2012. |
