Telugu Studies
The Department of Telugu was started in the Academic year 1959-60, five years after the S.V. University was founded. The Department of Telugu later renamed as “The Department of Telugu Studies” in 1981, keeping in view of the extensive and wide range of both Teaching and Research activities of the Department. The year 1984-85 was the Silver Jubilee year of the Department. The Department has been providing instruction in M.A. Telugu Language and Literature. At present the year intake of students is about 40 for Regular students for period of two years duration. In addition to teaching M.A. Telugu Course, the Department is actively engaged in doing research also. The Department is running M.Phil. course for a scholar for a period of 18 months for Full-Time and 30 months for Part-Time Scholars and Ph.D. course for Full-Time for period of 3-years and part-time courses for a period of 4-years through Research. The Faculty of the Department is also assisting the Directorate of Distance Education, S.V. University in conducting M.A. Telugu course through correspondence.
Since its inception, the Department of Telugu Studies has had a steady growth and has developed to be one of the Major Departments in the University and of the leading Telugu Departments among other Universities in the Country.
The curriculum of the P.G. Course in Telugu of S.V. University has certain distinctive features. It provides emphasis to Language and Literature besides introducing innovative subjects like Comparative Study of South Indian Literatures, Grammatical Structure of Modern Telugu, Functional Telugu, Telugu Journalism, Special Study of Annamacharya, Telugu Folk Literature, Telugu Novel, Andhra History and Culture, Theory of Translation, Pada Kavitha, Telugu Fiction - Novel and Shorty Story, Special Author, Official Language, Modern Telugu Poetry etc. as Optional papers.
The Department of Telugu Studies introduced Onamastics – the Study of Place Names, Surnames and Gothras, Individual names, Village names and street names etc. at research level.
The Department of Telugu Studies is the first and foremost Department, which had introduced Vyavaharika bhasha (Spoken Telugu) for drafting M.Phil. dissertations and Ph.D. theses. The first and foremost Ph.D. thesis drafted in Telugu Spoken Language is of Prof. M. Subba Reddy’s Ph.D. thesis in the year 1973.
It is the Department of Telugu Studies, which had introduced Telugu Journalism, Folk Literature as optional papers in M.A. Telugu Curriculum.Recently the Department of Telugu Studies has made the Telugu Journalism, Folk Literature as major papers and also introduced Writing for Media, Folk Arts, as major papers.
The Department is helping in the Research Programmes of other Departments of S.V. University like English, Hindi, Tamil and Urdu and other Universities of Andhra Pradesh in comparative aspects.
The Department is also giving guidance to the students of the Department and also other candidates who are appearing for Competitive Examinations like Civil Services, APPSC, NET, JRF and AP SET Examinations.
The Department of Telugu Studies successfully completed UGC SAP Programmes of both Phase –I, Phase-II and Phase-III and ASIHSS programme during the academic year 2007.
The Department also introduced self-supporting course with strength of 40 students during the academic year 2006-07 based on the demand and job opportunities in Telugu Course.
The Department celebrated Golden Jubilee Celebrations for Three days during November-2009. On that occasion the department conducted Seminars, Lectures and Cultural Programmes.

Presently working as BOS Chairperson in Department of Telugu studies.
