          S.V. University Laboratory Nursery School attached to the department of Home Science, was established in the year 1963 as first of its kind in Rayalaseema. Children in the age group of 3 to 5 years of the employees of S.V. University and also residents of Tirupati town belonging to all strata of population are given admission in the school. The school has reached a significant milestone of celebration of its Golden Jubilee during 2013 along with the Golden Jubilee of Department  of Home Science.

S.V.U. Laboratory Nursery School is mainly established as a laboratory for Students pursuing M.Sc. Human Development and Child Welfare (previously Child Development / Human Development) branch of study. For the five decades the school has been promoting the students to understand the needs and developmental tasks of young children in the age range of 2 to 6 years. The objective is not to experiment on children but to work with children so as to understand the needs and developmental tasks of young children and plan and implement curriculum based on the developmental needs of young children. This is done under the supervision of child development specialists of the Department. The Post-Graduate students of Human Development and Child Welfare branch identify children with problem behaviours and practice appropriate guidance approaches to children and parents through a variety of techniques. The S V U laboratory Nursery school also serves as a laboratory for students who pursue M.Sc. course in other specializations of Home Science like Food Science and Nutrition and Extension Education.

Philosophy

The broad philosophy of school since inception is to provide opportunities for young children through enriched experiences  in a child friendly environment which will facilitate a holistic and integrated development in different domains of child’s life i.e., physical, emotional, social and cognitive development. As a center for child development research and as a Practicum training centre of student teachers, it tries to give children a rich and varied educational experience and also strives to develop new teaching methods.

Method of education

The method of education in nursery school is ‘ play way’  and Montessori method. There will not be much emphasis on teaching of 3 R’s (Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic). Instead the activities are planned such that they will prepare children for formal schooling through pre-reading pre-writing skills and pre-arithmetic skills like number work.

Classes

The children are provided with learning experiences age wise and are placed in different classes as follows

     Junior Nursery:         Children in the age range of 3 years to 3.5 years

     Senior nursery:          Children in the age range of   3.5 years to 4.5 years

     Pre-Primary Class:    Children in the age range of   4.5 years 5 + years

The head of the Department of Home Science or Senior faculty of  Human Development and Child Welfare branch will be the  in-charge of the SV University laboratory Nursery School. At present Dr. K.V Sucharitha, Head,Dept. of Home Science is the in-charge of Nursery school.

The teachers play significant role in conducting pre-school programme. The teachers of Lab Nursery school are well qualified, trained and experienced  in child development aspects. . The following are teaching and non-teaching staff of nursery school.

Admission Criteria & Fees Structure:

Every year the applications for admission into the SVU laboratory nursery school will be issued in the Department of Home Science, SVU College of Sciences, S V University.  The fee will be collected term wise.

Curriculum

The Pre-school curriculum is developed by the staff of Human Development and Child Welfare specialization of Home Science Department considering the principles and Objectives of Pre- school education.

The faculty of Human Development branch of Home Science who has expertise in child development aspects along with the suggestions of highly qualified teachers of nursery school, plan curriculum systematically to ensure that the objectives of preschool education are met.  The activities of the curriculum are planned and the programme is implemented with appropriate teaching materials to facilitate children to learn basic skills and the experiences also prepare them for future formal learning of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic through pre-reading, pre-writing and number work in such a way that the experiences are enjoyable, memorable and worthwhile for children.

Besides the daily activities, children are provided with first-hand experience through other activities like field trips, excursion etc.,

Equipment:

             The Laboratory nursery is well equipped with indoor and outdoor equipment.  Significant Outdoor equipment’s are Swing, Slides, Jungle Gym, Sea-Saw, Merry go-round etc.

Sand pit

The ‘Sand Pit’ – a place of enjoyment and sharing for children is the unique feature of S.V.U. laboratory nursery school. Children play in the sand with small Buckets, spades, sieves to fill and empty sand. It helps to promote language development, social development, emotional release and joy for the child.

Indoor Equipment:

The school has also sufficient indoor space with plenty of indoor equipment like wooden building blocks, puzzles, toys, musical equipment etc.

 

Uniqueness of the School from Other Local Schools

The daily schedule followed is typical of an ideal nursery school with a mixed philosophy of Montessori and Progressive philosophy of education. The children are provided with a mid-morning nutritious snack at around 11 am. The snack is planned and prepared under the supervision of Nutrition experts, such that the child will receive one-third of a day’s nutritional requirements through the snack. The children are provided with different indoor and outdoor activities in a spacious indoor place and a wide playground. There is constant experimentation with new kinds of materials and methods of presentation in the daily routine. The day ends for junior and senior nursery classes by afternoon. The pre -primary children will go for a nap at noon after their lunch.  They will engage in some rigorous indoor and outdoor activities before they leave the school in the evening.

The students of M.Sc., Human Development and Child Welfare branch  as a part of course work for  the paper  “Early Childhood Education”, plan the programme for pre-school children in consultation with the staff of specialization and teachers of nursery school, prepare visual aids, story book lets, rhyme books etc.,and they will participate and implement the planned programme as student teachers. The student teachers’ participation is monitored and evaluated meticulously which helps not only to make M.Sc students good nursery teachers but also helpful for children to get varied experiences.

Thus, the S.V.U Laboratory nursery school has been successfully helping –

  • In providing hands on experience to the students of the department of Home Science
  • To impart relevant information to Parents pertaining to the aspects of child development
