Population Studies
DEPARTMENT OF POPULATION STUDIES & SOCIAL WORK
The department of Population Studies came into existence in 1973 with generous funding of Family Planning Association of India. The department now occupies premier position in the field of population Studies in India. The department conducts teaching, research, outreach programmes. The major objectives of the Department are to conduct and promote research in Population Studies, Population Education and Health issues. The department of Population Studies has also established its reputation as one of the leading centers of population education and research. The department offers a two year Masters programme in Population Studies and Doctoral in Population Studies. The students admitted will receive training and field work experience with in a healthy research environment, supported by faculty members who are working at the forefront of research in their respective fields.
The Department has organized several National and International Conferences and seminars in thrust areas. The department organized IUSSP Conference in the year 1982 inviting reputed Demographers from all over the world. The Department has undertaken several hundreds of extension activities to serve the society since its inception. The department has produced 136 PhDs and 28 M.Phils.
Library
Apart from University Central Library, the department is having full-fledged Library with qualified Librarian. There are more than 10,500 books including national and international journals.
Computer Lab
The department has computer lab with qualified personnel to guide the students in using the computer facilities. The computer lab contains 9 computers with network, scanner, printers and Xerox machine. The lab is meant both for teaching and research.
Audio-visual Unit
The department has developed audio-visual unit with the help of National and International Organizations. A mobile exhibition unit has been developed comprising of Films, Slides, Panels, Charts, Models, Video Cassettes, CDs, and DVDs etc. on population education (population dynamics, nutrition, health, reproductive health, family planning and HIV/AIDS. They are used in teaching and outreach activities in the department). The audio-visuals contain 16 mm Projector, LCD Projector, OHP Projector, DVD Player, Tape Recorder, Slide Projector and Camera.
Outreach programmes
Ever since from the inception of the department, it has conducted more than 1500 outreach programmes covering students of teacher training institutes, B.Ed. Colleges, Regional Science Centre, Junior Colleges, Degree Colleges, Nursing Colleges, Non-students Youth, Mahila Mandal , members of Self-help Groups etc.
Compliments on Outreach Activities
His Excellency former President of India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam appreciated the outreach activities of the department in his Golden Jubilee inaugural speech of our University. Also, NAAC (2002) made a special mention in appreciation of the outreach activity of our department in their report.
Prizes & Medals
The department awards “S.Govindarajulu Memorial Prize” and one Gold Medal for the first rank student in Population Studies every Year.

University Grants Commission- Special Assistance Programme
The department has received Rs. 27 lakhs under DRS-I (2002-07) and Rs. 40 lakhs (2008-2013) DRS-II. Further an amount of Rs 49 lakhs has been sanctioned by the UGC under DRS-III (2018-23).

The department is implementing semester system following choice based credit system. The department revised and updated the curriculum in 2014.

The student intake is 18 for Population studies.
Social Work
Master of Social Work was started in the year 2005 under Self Supporting Course. Masters in Social Work (M.S.W.) programs are designed to prepare students for advanced professional practice in the field of social work. Programs prepare students to work with vulnerable populations, acquaint them with the values and ethics of the social work profession, and give them a broad understanding of the dynamics of human behavior within the larger social environment. At the same time, M.S.W. programs aim to educate students on current social, economic and political forces, teach them about social programs and policies, and train them to design and implement research that will contribute to the profession.
Field education is an important aspect of any social work program and as an MSW student will spend 30 percent of course duration, working in the field. Further, all the students and faculty will participate one week Rural Camp programme every year. Students will begin with the Virtual Field Practicum (VFP), faculty-supervised course, where they have to work with an actor playing the role of a client to simulate real-world situations.

Professor D.SAI SUJATHA is Chair-Person BOS for Population studies & Social Work with qualifications of M.A.(POP.Studies), Ph.D, M.S.W., M.A., (Eco), B.Ed . She is having teaching Experience of 28 years. She received Andhra Pradesh State Best Teacher Award for the year 2019 and SVU College of Arts – Best Teacher Award for the year 2015. She published 103 articles in various National, and International Journals and books. Published 15 books, Guided 7 Ph.Ds and 2 M.Phils. Completed 0I major and 16 minor Research Projects. Member in various Professional bodies like IASSH, Population Education Society of India, ISAPS, NAPSWI, IAWS, ISPSW,Indian Red cross society Tirupati Revenue Branch.
Dr.T.Chandrasekarayya completed M.A (Population Studies), B.Ed. (Social Studies & English), M.S.W, PhD (Population Studies). He has been working as Faculty Member since 2007 in the Dept. of Population Studies, S.V.University, Tirupati, A.P. His specialisations are: Migration, Urbanisation, (Population Studies), Rural, Urban & tribal Community Development and Social Policy and Planning (Master of Social Work). He is author for eight books and co-author for two books. He guided two PhD’s and one M.Phil. He published 85 articles in international/nationals journals and books. He attended 103 Seminars, conference & Workshops / presented research paper. He appointed as member in academic and non-academic committees of S.V.University, Tirupati and observer for J.R.F, J.E.E and NEET. He is editorial board member for four journals and member in three professional bodies.
