The Government of Tamil Nadu for it’s liberal good will grant of Rs. 50,000/- to establish the Department in S.V.University in the year – 1960. The Department blossomed in the year – 1970 as full-fledged Post-Graduate and Research Department. Dr. N. Subbu Reddiar conceived the idea of the Post-Graduate and Research Department and worked ceaselessly for the establishment of Department. The faculty position of the Department was strengthened by sanctioning of two readers and two Lecturers by the UGC. Later the Government of Tamil Nadu sanctioned a chair for the post of professor. Thus a full-fledged department was established. IN the IX plan the UGC was kind enough to sanction one more professor post to the department. The Department as produced 110 Ph.Ds and organized 30 National Seminar and 20 UGC Major Research Project have been completed. Above 300 articles were presented in various national & Internal Seminars. The Department has instituted 2 Gold medals for M.A. Students 1. St.Tiruvalluvar Gold Medal 2. St. Ramalinga Swamigal Gold Medal. Dr. N. Subbu Reddiar was founder and HOD of the Department of Tamil. Now Two Academic consultants and one Guest faculty is working as Teaching faculty in the Department. Currently, the department is headed by Prof. B.V. Muralidhar, Principal, S.V.U. College of Arts.
