About Zoology Department:
The Department of Zoology was established in 1954 from the inception of the University to produce high quality Zoologists to cater the needs of the newly Independent India. Since the Institute is a State University, the Department has increasingly focused on post graduate education and research with a vision to promote the discovery and broad communication of knowledge about the physiology of animals.
Zoology Department has been recognized at National and International levels for its outstanding contributions in various disciplines of Animal Physiology. The University Grants Commission has recognized this Department as a Research Centre for the thrust areas “Environmental Biology” and “Ethnopharmacology”.
All the faculty have received advanced overseas training in their respective research areas and established active research collaborations across the Globe. In due recognition of the research potential and academic accomplishments of the faculty, the Department is being constantly supported with huge grants by several funding agencies namely UGC (DRS, COSIST, BSR), DST-FIST with a total outlay of Rs.280 lakhs. In addition to the above, the faculty members have received individual major research projects to the tune of Rs.196 lakhs from various funding agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST and ICMR during the last five-year period.
Since its inception, 520 Ph.D., and 393 M.Phil Degrees were awarded and 2200 research papers were published in journals of national and international repute with high impact factor.

Courses Offered:
The Department has the distinction of starting several new courses namely Sericulture, Biotechnology, Fishery Science & Aquaculture and Bioinformatics and a few of them have subsequently attained the status of independent Departments. Currently, the Department is offering M.Sc., Zoology and M.Sc., Animal Biotechnology as regular courses under Choice Based Credit System since 2006 and M.Sc., Zoology through Distance mode under annual pattern. In addition, the Department has research programmes namely M. Phil. and Ph.D. The students of this Department have good placement record across the globe.

Infrastructure facilities:
The Department has the credit of having well established infrastructure facilities such as Computing facility with internet connectivity, P.G. labs, Centralized Research labs with sophisticated equipment, Museum, Cell & Tissue Culture laboratory, Library and Animal house.
BIF facility:
The Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) was established in the Department of Zoology, Sri Venkateswara University with the financial support by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. The BIF Center has procured several hardware items such as two servers, 10 High end models of Desktop computers, Printer, Scanner, Photocopier, KVA UPS backup for uninterrupted power supply and 4Mb BSNL broadband Wi-Fi internet connectivity. All these existing facilities are being extended to the Faculty, Research Scholars and Students of all disciplines of life sciences in this University to carry out their Research work and project works in the field of Bioinformatics, Biotechnology and Computational Biology.
Memorandum of Understanding and Collaborations:
To promote collaborative research in the frontier areas of research in biomedical sciences the Department has entered into Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with Savannah State University, Savannah, Georgia, USA, CLC Bio Solutions, Hyderabad with its head-quarters in Germany and Sugen Life-Sciences, Tirupati with operating office at USA.
Promotion of Research and Science:
The Department is the Head-quarters for “Indian Society for Comparative Animal Physiology” and publishing a biannual journal “Indian Journal of Comparative Animal Physiology”. Recently, the department has established “District Environmental Center (DEC)” under the auspices of “National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi” to create awareness on Management strategies of environment among the public and ‘Research Centre for Neurological Disorders’ to promote research related to neurological disorders and to take up community out-reach welfare programmes. The Department has also a “Forum for Research Scholars” and “Zoological Society” to organize invited lectures, debates, competitions, quiz programmes etc. to enrich the academic environment in the Department besides participating in community activities such as ‘Swachabharath’, Blood donation camps and Tree plantation activities etc.
